First 3D prints of scans made with Kinect and ReconstructMe

April 2013

A couple weeks ago I used an XBox Kinect sensor and ReconstructMe to scan a bunch of objects and people to experimenting with 3D scanning and 3D printing. The following week I printed everything out and produced a nice little pile of brightly colored prints.

Prints of scans from Tuesday (3.26.2013)

The first round of scans were all random objects and pieces found at UNK’s sculpture and glassblowing studio. Photos of the objects scanned can be found here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/zenwebb/sets/72157633107417628/

Prints of scans from Thursday (3.27.2013)

The second round of scans were of a student from the sculpture program who wanted to try doing a handstand. She balanced herself on top of a rolling work table, which we spun around to get a complete scan. The red print didn’t turn out as well as I’d like, but the handstand came out great! Prints of scans from Friday (3.28.2013)

Once I had the process figured out, I invited students to meet me in a computer lab on campus to get scanned and printed for free. I had about a dozen students drop by, and a whole pile of great prints. Here are some photos of the original scans: http://www.flickr.com/photos/zenwebb/sets/72157633116806709/
